Open Source Cake Mix
I was quite intrigued the other day to find a cake mix with the recipe printed on it. This was not just the ingredients list either: it’s laid out the way you would find it in a recipe.
It seems that this is an attempt to gain credibility, that is, to present the cake mix as being just as good as making the cake yourself from basic ingredients. Giving away the “source code” in this situation probably doesn’t decimate their sales. Cake recipes aren’t hard to come by. People wanting to make a cake from scratch would do so anyway, and people using a cake mix can’t be bothered following a normal recipe.
I find myself wondering if this has any applicability to open source hardware or open source software.
